Last week (flash backs) | In disguise and descending into the minesMiss Moss, Lia and Leshanna have disguised themselves as Drow and Thoradin, Gunther and Londer (Florida Jake) disguised as slaves, with their unconcealed weapons in the bag of holding. Right inside the door, they are lifting a steel grate to sneak underneath. They can see the hole where the lift is on the left hand side of the room, and a corridor going the other way. Aspiral staircase descends. Lia summons a dire beast companion. They step onto the elevator and it begins to descend into the darkness. They start to see passages leading off. They reach one of the levels when it stops and they can see that it is a mine, with picks and carts. There is no sound at all and it is completely dark and empty. The elevator begins to move down again. It stops and they see another level, almost indistinguishable from the previous. There are skeletons about, it seems abandoned. They can see iron ore and railway carts and hear the chains clanging against the storm. The light from the room above becomes smaller and smaller. They continue to descend. The temperature is rising and some of them begin to sweat. They begin to hear things, sounds of activity. They can see what looks like signs of life. There are no skeletons they can see at this depth. Around level 13 they begin to see torches. At 15 they can see an opening before them. There is a chamber that opens up. They see miners and a giant lizard overlooking them. It is a Salamander. There are dozens of dwarves and halflings. Thoradin begins to rush forward but Lia drags him back and whacks him on the back of the head theatrically. The moment they go down, instead of stone walls they are surrounded by fire. On all sides they can see torches and iron platforms, huge ceilings. This time they can see ironslag. There is a pervasive smell of sulphur and steel. They are in a gantry – on either side of the elevator when it comes to its 30 second stop there is a bridgelike structure (gantry) around and a pathway east and west. On the eastern side they can see orcs. There are buckets filled with ore suspended from the ceiling, moving across. The orcs collect the buckets and empty the ore out into the room. They can hear chains and the bucket system carting the ore. There is an enormous stone slab and the orcs are taking the ore and piling it up on the table to be sifted by other orcs. On the western side they can see a huge open space. There are flames, another gantry with a chain floor. The keep going down. This time they can see the bottom half of the huge room on the western side. There is no light. They feel like they have reached the bottom. North they can see dozens of goblins that are cleaning enormous stone tables, rushing around. It’s lit, very bright in that room. They can see a huge chamber lit by braziers. They can see some partially constructed statue. It appears to be made of metal. Huge chains are holding it in place from above. It appears to be the Vonnendod Colossus. They can see the torso suspended, hanging from chains. They can see movement out there. It appears to be hellhounds. Fire eminates from their mouths. The chains become taut and they move back up. The gantry is overlooking the statue below. Getting off the lift They get off the lift on the level with the orcs, and stand in the dark hallway. They are able to walk around the gantry to get to the other room. They can see the ceiling above them and the flames of the braziers. Hanging from the gantry they can see a gauntlet and arm for the statue, another crane holds a sword. Looking through the cracks in the floor they can see two enormous dogs near the feet of where the statue would be. Across the room they see a heavily armoured fire giant adjusting levers on a hut that has a glowing red dome on it. In his hand is an enormous warhammer that he is spinning as he works. Inside the head of the warhammer is a cage and there is a humanoid trapped inside, trying to stay upright as the warhammer spins. The buckets hanging from the ceiling move towards them on one side and away from them on the other side in a loop – they are going into a hole in the wall. On the western gantry it’s lit. There are stairs that lead down to the level below to the south. On the northern and eastern gantry are not lit. The ceiling is 40 feet above and there is 50 feet below them. Hanging in mid air, bolted to the floor and ceiling is the helmed head and upper torso of the Vonnendad. The other items of the statue are also chained to the floor and ceiling. Lia moves out to have a closer look around. The large fire giant below gets an iron ball and rolls it across the room, and the dogs start chasing it. In the south they see the enormous adamantine doors that were locked, leading out into the forest. Londer checks the enemies – the Duke is clearly very strong with hit points in the hundreds. The dogs are strong but not to be feared |
